Governor Sanwo-Olu said he would report officers who shot at the protesters in Lekki to “higher command” and President Buhari.
Addressing Lagosians in a statewide broadcast, Sanwo-Olu said he has no power and controls over the rule of engagement of the military.
“For clarity, it is imperative to explain that no sitting governor controls the rule of engagement of the military. I have nonetheless instructed an investigation into the order and adopted the rule of engagement employed by officers of the Nigerian Army that were deployed to the Lekki toll gate last night.”
“This will reveal to taking this up with the higher command of the Nigerian Army and to seek the intervention of Mr. President in his capacities as the commander in chief to unravel the sequence of event that happened yesterday night.”
Sanwo-Olu described the incident as unfortunate and tragic, adding that he was never involved in the directives that saw armed operatives open fire on the demonstrators.
He also stated that there were no casualties recorded during the shooting contrary to the widespread reports circulated online.
